Spring is only a few months away and it’s time to already start thinking about the upcoming maintenance provisions that your roof requires. A pinch of TLC can make a world of difference for a long-lasting roof.  Winter can be pretty harsh, what with temperatures going up and down, the rain, sleet, snow and hail can do quite a number on your roof.  In order to ensure your roof stays in tip-top shape, it’s essential to spot any problems quickly, ultimately preparing it for spring.

Simply laying down some new shingles or uncluttering debris could be the extent of your roof maintenance.  There are times, however, when the damage is so bad that you may have to mull over the idea of getting a new roof. Follow these basic maintenance tips, and you will be able to determine the extent of damage and plan your next steps accordingly.

REGULAR ROOF INSPECTIONS

Pay attention to signs of damage outside such as considerable granule buildup in your eaves-troughs, rust, unfastened or warped shingles, excessive accumulation of leaves and debris on your shingles which can lead to mold and other fungal issues to spread. Indoors you may see signs of water damage such as a sagging ceiling, stains, damp walls, and or the presence of mold, mildew and decay.

By hiring an experienced roofer you can expect to receive services, for instance, a thorough roof inspection, patching up leaks, removing damaged or loose shingles and replacing them, eliminating leaves and debris. “Do it yourself (DIY)” roofing maintenance can certainly help, but after a tough New York City winter, it’s best to leave it to the professionals.

KEEP YOUR ROOF CLEAR OF BRANCHES

It’s important to trim any and all branches away from your roof for two reasons; it will keep animals away from your roof, and it diminishes the possibility of tearing a loose limb off of a tree during a serious windstorm.

CHIMNEY MAINTENANCE

Attending to your chimney, not only beneficial to the health of your roof, it ensures it’s in great shape for those cold winter nights.  Pay close attention to any damage to the chimney caps and whether there are any cracks in the mortar.

A chimney caps purpose is to keep moisture out if, however, moisture does build up you’re likely to encounter mold, as well as damage to the mortar, dampers and liners.  The chimney cap also helps keep animals out, if they get it they aren’t always able to get out, dying and causing a whole whack of problems.  A properly installed chimney cap also eliminates debris build-up, which can lead to a serious fire hazard.

KEEP YOUR EAVESTROUGHS/GUTTERS CLEAN

Spring means rain, and rain means your gutters need to be able to manage all that water.  Remove any debris and make sure they’re attached properly.  Tighten and replace portions as needed.

Often enough you can clean your gutters yourself, a few basic tools – ladder, trowel, hose, scrubber, and protective gear like gloves and goggles – and you’re good to go. Scoop roof debris out with the trowel, and make sure to rinse afterwards.  If you’re inclined, or it’s necessary, scrub the eaves troughs and give it a finishing rinse.  To finish off, check to ensure the water is flowing running without obstruction.

Don’t forget, safety is paramount – it’s best to have someone spot you, particularly while using the ladder.  At the very least, ensure somebody is aware of what you’re up to.

If you require subsequent repairs, be sure to consult with a professional and experienced roofer before moving on to any next steps.
